Disposing Of Old TVs In An Eco-friendly Way

Have you just upgraded to a large new TV or has your old set stopped working. If so do you know that it is important to ensure your old TV is disposed of in a eco-friendly way so that it does not cause environmental problems if simply dumped at a landfill site. This is due to the fact that televisions contain hazardous compounds such as cadmium, lead, and mercury. But worse than the fact that these chemicals harm our precious environment is that they are also a hazard to human health too. Read on to find out the different options you have when it comes to disposing of your TV in an environmentally friendly manner.

    • Give it away– If the TV is still working, then why not give it to someone less fortunate than yourself. There are plenty of people who would be glad of any television and there are charitable organisations that can help you get your old equipment to the people who need it most. Also consider asking any local youth groups if they need an extra TV.
    • Return it to the manufacturer – Under the WEEE Regulations covering Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, manufacturers must provide a service to help consumers deal ethically with their e-waste. Soget in touch with the manufacturer to find out what options are available from them to help you out and consequently help the environment. If you are purchasing a new television, the retailer you buy from may be able to dispose of your old one and will do so in a manner that is compliant with the current regulations (which in the EU is the WEEE Directive). Many of the better retailers provide this service even if you did not originally buy the TV from them.
    • Sell it– Another possibility if your TV still functions well and is in reasonable condition is to sell it. This way you can make a little money and won’t have to worry about disposing of it if you sell locally and the new buyer can come and collect it.
    • Hire the professionals – This is one of the best ways to be sure that you are dealing with your old equipment in an environmentally considerate way. When you employ an e-waste disposal and recycling company, you will gain peace of mind that all your electronic waste is being dealt with properly so is particularly useful for large organisations that have a reputation to protect.
    • Reuse the television yourself – Are you sure that there isn’t the need and space for the old TV in your own home? A teenager’s bedroom or den or, if you are lucky enough to have one, a home gym where you can catch up on your favourite box set while getting fit at the same time.Or what about in the kitchen where you can get inspiration for your cooking from one of the many food programmes available to watch? Whatever you decide to do think carefully before you dispose of an old TV set.
