There are so many different Christmas plays and musicals, people enjoy during the holiday season. Here are some of the most popular and what they’re about.
A Christmas Carol
This traditional re-telling of the Charles Dickens timeless classic featuring the classic song titled “God Bless Us Everyone”. A Christmas Carol is about how three spirits take Ebenezer Scrooge on a journey through his life where he learns the true meaning of Christmas and life.
Meet Me in St Louis
Based on the 1944 film, “Meet Me in St. Louis” is about a family living in St. Louis, Missouri on the eve of the 1904 World’s Fair. The musical varied from the film with some additional songs and some additional character development, the focus is not primary on the character of Esther, as in the film.
White Christmas
White Christmas the musical is based on the beloved, timeless film. It is an uplifting musical worthy of year round production.
Mame
Mame is a musical originally with the book by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee and music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. Originally titled My Best Girl, it is based on the 1955 novel Auntie Mame by Patrick Dennis and a 1956 Broadway play, by Lawrence and Lee, who starred Rosalind Russell. Set in New York and spanning the Great Depression and World War II, it focuses on eccentric bohemian Mame Dennis, whose famous motto is “Life is a banquet and most poor sons of bitches are starving to death.”
She Loves Me
She Loves Me is a musical with a book by Joe Masteroff. The musical that premiered on Broadway in 1963, revolves around Budapest shop employees Georg Nowack and Amalia Balash who, despite being consistently at odds with each other at work, are unaware that each is the other’s secret pen pal met through lonely-hearts ads. The play resurfaced as the 1998 movie, You’ve Got Mail, featuring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
Subways are for Sleeping
Subways Are for Sleeping is a musical with a book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. The original Broadway production played in 1961-1962. The musical was inspired by an article about subway homelessness. Edmund G. Love slept on subway trains throughout the 1950s and encountered many unique individuals. Love then embarked on the bizarre hobby, he ate dinner at every restaurant listed on the Manhattan yellow pages directory, visiting them in order.
